"Tom and I received our draft numbers on the same drawing: I was 10, he was 5. I bummed some homemade beer from my girlfriend's father and he, I, and his parents got a bit tipsy that night.
A couple years later, I was reporting for my physical in Des Moines--for the USAF. Tom was at Drake and rescued me from bunking in with a guy that the judge had said had to go into the Marines. Had over 10 counts against him and was a 10th grade dropout.
I crashed in at Tom's frat and we re-enacted our draft number party. Of course I had to take my ASVAB test with one of the worst hangovers I'd ever had. They scored it on the spot and I got a 99. I told the sergeant that I thought I knew the question that I missed, however he told me that 99 was a perfect score. See, the power of beer."
